Counselling and Psychotherapy

What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling and Psychotherapy use many of the same core skills. Counselling tends to be a shorter term process which looks at specific issues.
Psychotherapy looks in depth at more fundamentally ingrained aspects of your life and your related issues so that this usually is a longer term process.

What is my approach?

My therapeutic approach is known as Integrative. The main theoretical bases upon which I draw are person-centred, psychoanalytic, existential and humanistic, incorporating CBT or solution-focussed methods where suitable.

My many years of training in psychology, behaviour, counselling and psychotherapy gives me a strong core theoretical basis of understanding.

I draw upon this knowledge, as well as my experience in counselling and psychotherapy in different settings, to bring together different aspects of theory and practice which I believe best fit my individual clients and their needs.

This is carried out in a supportive jargon-free atmosphere where I'll relate to you as an individual, looking at your unique life story.

What do sessions involve?

We sit together in a quiet, comfortable, private counselling room. I will listen to what you choose to talk about.

The way I practice is non-directive, that is I do not offer advice or structured questionnaires - we will focus on the area or areas which are of most concern to you. The sessions are about you as a unique individual, so we look together at your life story, where you are and what it is you want from your counselling.

As you feel more comfortable about talking you may discover there are other areas of focus which you want to explore. I aim to support you in your exploration.
